The 2017 Lowedown Awards

Hello again fellow movie lovers,

This is my 4th annual Lowedown awards…but the first year I have posted to the Movie Corner.  I am honored to present to you my awards for the DVD releases of 2017.  First the rules of how these awards are presented:Lowedown award

  1. The movie has to have been released on physical media (DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K) during the calendar year.
  2. Categories are: $29.99 4K Ultra, $24.99 Blu-Ray, $14.99 Sleeper, $.99 Stinker,  and $9.99 DVD genre awards (Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Drama, Action, Animated, Comedy, and Thriller)
  3. A movie can only be nominated for one category.
  4. The top four nominations are chosen for each category
  5. Twitter followers vote for the winner of the four nominations
  6. In the event of a tie, I will present the final vote

I feel it’s crucial that I leave the final vote to the fans on Twitter…the final decision should not come from me unless there is a tie.  Now let’s get to the awards…

$9.99 Sci-Fi DVD award

ArrivalNominees: Alien Covenant

The Arrival – My Score: 7.4

Cast=9 Acting=9 Plot=8 Ending=8 Story=6
CGI=9 Pace=4 Action=4 Alien=7 Twist=10

Alien: Covenant – My Score: 7.9

Cast=8 Acting=7 Plot=8 Ending=8 Story=10

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – My Score: 7.7

Cast=8 Acting=9 Plot=7 Ending=7 Story=8
CGI=10 Action=7 Pace=6 Space=10 Funny=5

With absolutely no votes, “Alien: Covenant” was eliminated first…I guess that means I liked it a lot more than I should have. The next to be eliminated with 20% of the votes…”Arrival”. I was surprised, but that left two solid movies.  With 27% of the votes, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” drops. With 53% of the votes…

The award for $9.99 Sci-Fi DVD of 2017 goes to “War For the Planet of the Apes”

 $9.99 Fantasy DVD Award

GOTG2Nominees:Pirates of the Caribbean 5

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – My Score: 8.6

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=7 Ending=10 Story=8
CGI=10 Action=10 Funny=10 Comic=7 Twist=6

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales – My Score: 8.6

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=8 Ending=9 Story=9
Fantasy=9 CGI=10 Pace=7 Fight=7 Sequel=9

Fantastic BeastsFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – My Score: 8.2Doctor Strange

Cast=8 Acting=7 Plot=9 Ending=10 Story=8

Doctor Strange – My Score: 8.7

Cast=10 Acting=9 Plot=8 Ending=10 Story=8
CGI=10 Action=9 Funny=7 Twist=8 Comic=8

It seems that people forgot how good this was or that it did come out on DVD in 2017, but with 11% of the votes, “Doctor Strange” leaves Fantasy Island. Walking the plank with 12% of the votes, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales” is also eliminated.  “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” gets 18% of the votes, even though I gave it the lowest score out of the nominees. “Brandy…you’re a fine girl…what a good wife you would be.” So with 59% of the votes…

The $9.99 Fantasy DVD award for 2017 goes to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”

$9.99 Animated DVD Award

Cars 3Nominees:Moana

Cars 3 – My Score: 8.1

Cast=8 Acting=7 Plot=7 Ending=8 Story=7
Art=9 Voice=9 Music=8 Family=10 Funny=8

Moana – My Score: 8.7

Cast=7 Acting=8 Plot=10 Ending=9 Story=9
Art=10 Voice=9 Music=8 Family=10 Funny=7

SingSing – My Score: 8.2Storks

Cast=9 Acting=7 Plot=8 Ending=9 Story=7
Art=10 Voice=10 Music=8 Family=8 Funny=6

Storks – My Score: 7.4

Cast=8 Acting=6 Plot=4 Ending=9 Story=6
Art=9 Voice=10 Music=6 Family=10 Funny=6

I was really disappointed that Despicable Me 3 was not on here, but it didn’t make my top four.  Instead, Storks slides into the fourth spot and gets no votes…what a waste of space that was. Cars 3 and Sing were neck and neck all the way through…but they each got only 6% of the votes.  88% of the votes is the largest by far for The Lowedown awards…you’re welcome!

The $9.99 Animated DVD award for 2017 goes to “Moana”

$9.99 Comedy DVD Award

Girls TripNominees:Baywatch

Girls Trip – My Score: 7.0

Cast=8 Acting=7 Plot=6 Ending=7 Story=6
Funny=8 Chemistry=7 Script=5 Physical=7 Ad-Lib=9

Baywatch – My Score: 6.7

Cast=8 Acting=5 Plot=6 Ending=7 Story=4
Funny=8 Pace=8 F/X=6 Physical=8 Reboot=7

Going in StyleGoing in Style – My Score: 6.9Edge of 17

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=8 Ending=8 Story=6
Funny=6 Chemistry=7 Script=5 Heist=7 Twist=4

The Edge of Seventeen – My Score: 7.1

Cast=7 Acting=8 Plot=6 Ending=7 Story=9
Funny=4 Chemistry=8 Script=8 Tragedy=7 Pace=7

2017 was a disappointing year for me with the comedy genre.  Were the movies bad or am I getting too old to appreciate them? First to fall was Going in Style…I expected Last Vegas, but they just came in last at 6% of the votes. With 25% of the votes, Girls Trip was next to fall.  Edge of Seventeen was my favorite of the year and got a respectable 31% of the votes. That leaves the movie that was chock full of dick jokes, slow motion running and baby oil…

The 2017 $9.99 Comedy DVD award goes to “Baywatch”

$9.99 Drama DVD award

Lost City of ZNominees:Hidden Figures

The Lost City of Z – My Score: 7.9

Cast=9 Acting=9 Plot=8 Ending=7 Story=8
Interest=6 Script=10 Pace=5 History=8 Filming=9

Hidden Figures – My Score: 8.2

Cast=9 Acting=9 Plot=7 Ending=8 Story=9
History=10 Script=10 Filming=7 Truth=9 Pace=4

Patriots DayPatriots Day – My Score: 7.7Beauty and the Beast

Cast=10 Acting=7 Plot=7 Ending=6 Story=8
History=9 Script=7 Filming=9 Truth=9 Pace=5

Beauty and the Beast – My Score: 8.1

Cast=9 Acting=7 Plot=8 Ending=8 Story=7
CGI=10 Pace=6 Fantasy=10 Musical=8 Family=8

This one really went as I had thought…with 8% of the votes, Lost City of Z was eliminated. Even though it was a really good film, it’s just that not many people saw it.  I didn’t think it would be this close, but Patriots Day and Beauty and the Beat tied with 17% of the tally.  I thought Beauty and the Beast would have had more votes…but it’s all about the award right? With 58% of the votes…your favorite and mine:

The $9.99 Drama DVD award goes to “Hidden Figures”

$9.99 Horror DVD Award

Train to BusanNominees:Get Out

Train to Busan – My Score: 8.1

Cast=4 Acting=9 Plot=8 Ending=10 Story=9
Scare=9 Jump=7 F/X=8 Zombie=10 Gore=7

Get Out – My Score: 7.8

Cast=6 Acting=8 Plot=9 Ending=9 Story=8
Scare=7 Jump=6 F/X=8 Psycho=9 Twist=8

Annabelle CreationAnnabelle Creation – My Score: 7.6Split

Cast=6 Acting=8 Plot=8 Ending=9 Story=7
Scare=6 Jump=7 F/X=8 Creep=10 Twist=7

Split – My Score: 7.4

Cast=7 Acting=10 Plot=8 Ending=7 Story=6
Scare=5 Jump=5 F/X=9 Twist=7 Psycho=10

Ok…y’all are just crazy.  Train to Busan was my favorite horror movie of 2017…if you haven’t seen it and you are any type of horror fan, I recommend it. But alas, it gets only 7% of the votes and was eliminated…along with Annabelle Creation. Annabelle is finally on the right track, but not for the award.  That brings us to Split and Get Out…but with 29% of the votes, Split gets the axe. That leaves only one movie standing with 57% of the votes…

The 2017 $9.99 Horror DVD of the year goes to “Get Out”

$9.99 Thriller DVD Award

Deepwater HorizonNominees:Detroit

Deepwater Horizon – My Score: 8.4

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=8 Ending=7 Story=9
Thrill=10 Pace=9 Script=7 Disaster=8 History=8

Detroit – My Score: 8.1

Cast=8 Acting=10 Plot=8 Ending=7 Story=10
Interest=7 Script=8 Filming=9 History=7 Pace=7

AlliedAllied – My Score: 8.3Wind River

Cast=9 Acting=8 Plot=9 Ending=9 Story=8
History=6 Script=8 Filming=9 Spy=8 Romance=9

Wind River – My Score: 7.7

Cast=8 Acting=10 Plot=7 Ending=10 Story=8
Intense=8 Pace=5 Script=8 Crime=7 Twist=6

Four good movies on DVD…eliminate one and there will be three. Unfortunately, it didn’t work this way. Allied and Wind River tied with 14% of the votes each and I had to drop them both.  So that leaves Deepwater Horizon and Detroit…two good films that weigh a ton…one falls off and the other won.  That’s what you would think…but no.  Both movies tied as well with 36% of the votes each.  This means that I get the final vote and I will go by the score:

The 2017 $9.99 Thriller Award goes to “Deepwater Horizon”

$9.99 Action DVD Award

Atomic BlondeNominees:Baby Driver

Atomic Blonde – My Score: 8.0

Cast=9 Acting=7 Plot=8 Ending=9 Story=7
Violent=8 Pace=7 F/X=10 Spy=9 Comic=6

Baby Driver – My Score: 8.5

Cast=9 Acting=8 Plot=10 Ending=9 Story=7
Violence=9 Pace=8 F/X=9 Vehicle=6 Stunts=10

F8 of the FuriousThe Fate of the Furious – My Score: 8.5Hitman's Bodyguard

Cast=10 Acting=6 Plot=7 Ending=10 Story=6
Action=10 Pace=8 F/X=10 Vehicle=10 Crash=8

The Hitman’s Bodyguard – My Score: 8.4

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=9 Ending=9 Story=6
Violence=8 Pace=8 F/X=9 Funny=8 Chemistry=9

I thought this would be close…four really good action films that I would have a hard time choosing between.  But not for the fans…The Hitman’s Bodyguard got a big goose egg and with no votes was eliminated quickly.  Next, Atomic Blonde took a bullet to the head with 7% of the votes.  Fate of the Furious left next with a mere 13% of the votes…that left 80% of the votes for just one movie. Retarded means slow, is he slow?  No, he is the winner:

The 2017 $9.99 Action Movie Award goes to “Baby Driver”

Now it is time for the big awards.  I know you’ve been waiting for these…chomping at the bit, maybe. First up:

$14.99 Sleeper Award

The sleeper award is given to a movie that you didn’t know would be good, but at least scores a 7 out of 10. Usually these are straight to video releases.

Hell or High WaterNominees:The Limehouse Golem

Hell or High Water – My Score: 7.5

Cast=9 Acting=10 Plot=7 Ending=7 Story=8
Action=8 Pace=4 F/X=8 Chemistry=8 Funny=6

The Limehouse Golem – My Score: 7.5

Cast=7 Acting=9 Plot=8 Ending=8 Story=8
Intense=6 Pace=5 Script=8 Crime=9 Twist=7

Autopsy of Jane DoeThe Autopsy of Jane Doe – My Score: 7.7The Villainess

Cast=6 Acting=7 Plot=8 Ending=8 Story=9
Scare=8 Jump=6 F/X=7 Creep=8 Twist=10

The Villainess – My Score: 7.7

Cast=4 Acting=9 Plot=5 Ending=10 Story=6
Violent=10 Pace=9 F/X=9 Gun=7 Fight=8

I recommend these movies if you have not seen them! This did not go as I wanted…with 7% of the votes, The Villainess pays the price first. The Limehouse Golem drops out next with only 9% of the votes.  With 21% of the votes, it’s The Autopsy of Jane Doe falls…leaving just one movie for the win.  Chris Pine and Ben Foster come together for 63% of the votes..

The $14.99 Sleeper Award  for 2017 goes to “Hell of High Water”

$.99 Stinker Award

The Stinker award is given not for a bad movie, but rather for the biggest disappointment. My hopes were shattered by these 4 nominees and I gave Twitter the chance to pick the worst.

It Comes at NightNominees:Monster Trucks

It Comes at Night – My Score: 5.4

Cast=6 Acting=7 Plot=6 Ending=3 Story=4
Intense=6 Pace=4 F/X=7 Apoc=6 Twist=5

Monster Turcks – My Score: 5.8

Cast=8 Acting=6 Plot=3 Ending=7 Story=4
Funny=5 Chem=6 Script=4 Monster=7 Family=8

Why Him?Why Him? – My Score: 5.2Open Water 3

Cast=8 Acting=5 Plot=5 Ending=7 Story=4
Funny=4 Chem=4 Script=5 Physical=6 Ad-lib=4

Open Water 3: Cage Dive – My Score: 5.1

Cast=3 Acting=5 Plot=7 Ending=6 Story=4
Scare=6 Jump=5 F/X=5 POV=6 Monster=4

These all got mediocre scores, but disappointed me in some way to end up on this list. Why Him? I expected to be disappointed, but it was hard for a cast like that not to have any chemistry…they are out after 10% of the votes. Open Water 3 got 20% of the votes, but again I expected to be disappointed…they sank to the bottom of the ocean.  That leaves Monster Tucks and It Comes at Night…each getting 35% of the votes and causing the second tie of these awards. By score alone is not enough here…I am lookin for the biggest stinker of the year.  I expected Monster Trucks to be a silly movie…

The 2017 $.99 Stinker of the year is “It Comes at Night”

$24.99 Blu-Ray Award!!!

The $24.99 Blu-Ray award is the second biggest award I give out.  The only requirement is the movie has to have received an 8.5 – 8.9.  These are my four favorites out of all the movies I scored in that range…then the great Twitter fans voted for their favorite out of those.

The AccountantNominees:John Wick 2

The Accountant – My Score: 8.8

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=7 Ending=9 Story=8
Action=9 Pace=8 F/X=10 Fights=10 Twist=9

John Wick: Chapter 2  – My Score: 8.8

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=7 Ending=10 Story=8
Action=10 Pace=9 F/X=10 Gun=10 Twist=6

Kong: Skull IslandKong: Skull Island – My Score: 8.7Wonder Woman

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=9 Ending=10 Story=8
Imagine=9 CGI=10 Pace=7 Monster=10 Twist=6

Wonder Woman – My Score: 8.9

Cast=9 Acting=8 Plot=10 Ending=10 Story=10
CGI=10 Action=10 Funny=7 Comic=8 Twist=7

This was a good battle! Four great movies for 2017 set to fight to the death…well to the award, anyway. Kong: Skull Island came away with 14% of the votes and is eliminated first. Shortly thereafter, The Accountant is eliminated with 19% of the votes. I bet the suspense is killing you, huh? Well I’m going to milk this a little bit…who has the most votes between John Wick: Chapter 2 and Wonder Woman? The Lowedown supports gender equality in all forms…and at 29% of the votes, John Wick: Chapter 2 is taken out (hopefully not with a pencil). One move is left standing with 38% of the votes…

The 2017 $24.99 Blu-Ray of the year goes to “Wonder Woman”

$29.99 4K Ultra Award!!

This is my Best Picture award…the only requirement is that it rates a 9.0 or higher on The Lowedown. Fortunately (or rather unfortunately). I only had four video releases that scored high enough to be nominated…let’s take a look at them.

Hacksaw RidgeNominees:Logan

Hacksaw Ridge – My Score: 9.0

Cast=9 Acting=10 Plot=8 Ending=9 Story=10
History=8 Script=9 Filming=9 War=10 Pace=8

Logan – My Score: 9.2

Cast=8 Acting=10 Plot=10 Ending=10 Story=9
CGI=10 Action=10 Funny=8 Comic=8 Twist=9

DunkirkDunkirk – My Score: 9.4Spider-Man Homecoming

Cast=10 Acting=10 Plot=10 Ending=10 Story=8
Interest=9 Script=8 Filming=10 History=9 War=10

Spider-Man: Homecoming – My Score: 9.0

Cast=9 Acting=8 Plot=9 Ending=10 Story=9
CGI=10 Action=10 Funny=10 Comic=7 Twist=8

For 2017, it came down to two war movies and two comic book movies for the 4K Ultra Award…an interesting mix to say the least.  Hacksaw Ridge kicked the grenade first and was sent home with a purple heart and 10% of the votes. Spider-Man: Homecoming got his suit taken away…and he was sent home with 12% of the votes.  The suspense was killing me, as Logan and Dunkirk were neck and neck for a while. At 9.4, Dunkirk got The Lowedown’s highest score of the year. That being said, Logan was my favorite movie of 2017.  As the votes finished settling in, one movie started pulling ahead.  Second place landed 37% of the votes and the winner 41%…your winner is (drumroll please)

The 2017 $29.99 4K Ultra Award goes to…LOGAN!!
