J. J. Abrams fills the Star Wars Episode IX Director Role

After the departure of Colin Trevorrow, Star Wars has now announced that J. J. Abrams will return to direct the final entry in the new trilogy.

Their website includes the following quote from Lucas Films’s President Kathleen Kennedy:

“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.”

This quote, and the fact that they picked Abrams in the first place, seems to point to Star Wars making the safe choice. Abrams makes well made, crowd-pleasing, safe films. With him at the helm, we can at least expect Episode IX to be good. Will it be great? Amazing even? I’m hopeful, but I’m not holding my breath.
