The Lowedown – June 2018

June 2018

June is an exciting month…school is out in most places, Summer is here, and most importantly it’s time for the summer blockbusters!! We got a taste of that with Infinity War coming out early…I wonder what we have in store this month on The Lowedown? Wait why would I wonder…I know exactly what we have it store. Sometimes I even amaze myself…HAHA.

Winchester

Here’s The Lowedown on “Winchester” (PG-13 – 2018 – US)…Do you believe in Ghosts, Doctor?

Genre: Horror/Paranormal

My Score: 6.2

Cast=7 Acting=8 Plot=6 Ending=7 Story=8
Scare=3 Jump=4 F/X=7 Creep=8 Twist=4

Ensconced in her sprawling California mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester believes she is haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.
Jason Clarke Rocks the garden
“Thirteen nails will seal them in.” This made a better movie in general but lost points in the Horror genre for not being scary at all. I loved the two leads and really enjoyed the story…it was just more of a drama with a ghost story. Do you know what the most terrifying monster is? It’s the one you invite into your Blu-Ray player. I loved the story of the Winchester House, so it was worth a watch for me.  You might want to lower your expectations.

Deadpool 2

Here’s The Lowedown on “Deadpool 2” (R – Theatrical – US)…Dubstep’s for pussies!!

Genre: Fantasy/Comic

My Score: 8.9

Cast=10 Acting=8 Plot=6 Ending=10 Story=9

Foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (AKA. Deadpool), brings together a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with supernatural abilities from the brutal, time-travelling cyborg, Cable.
X-Force to the rescue
“With this collar on, my superpower is just unbridled cancer. Give me a bow and arrow and I’m basically Hawkeye.” I had a 24-month wedgie waiting for this movie to come out. I laughed, I cried, I laughed, I cheered, I laughed…This movie has tons of dry wit and raunchy humor that I snorted during the film. My wife blames it on my immaturity and I just stick my tongue out at her.  Where was I? oh yeah…watch this movie!!!

Red Sparrow

Here’s The Lowedown on “Red Sparrow” (R – 2018 – US)…You sent me to whore school!

Genre: Thriller/Spy

My Score: 7.6

Cast=9 Acting=8 Plot=7 Ending=9 Story=7
Intense=6 Script=7 Pace=4 Spy=10 Twist=9

After a Ballerina is severely injured, she is recruited to a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon.
That could leave a mark
“Every human being is a puzzle of need. You must become the missing piece, and they will tell you anything.”  I really liked this…what I thought would be the story of “Black Widow” turned out to be more like “Le Femme Nikita”. I found myself trying to figure out which side she was on and that made for some really good suspense. Even though there was a lot more full frontal nudity than I expected (not to mention the sex scenes)…I found it pretty tasteful. I don’t think it should be a secret…Red Sparrow is worth a watch!!

I Kill Giants

Here’s The Lowedown on “I Kill Giants” (NR – 2017 – Belgium)…Dark Omens are totally cool.

Genre: Fantasy/Coming of Age

My Score: 6.4

Cast=6 Acting=7 Plot=7 Ending=5 Story=8
Imagine=7 CGI=6 Pace=4 Age=6 Message=8

A pre-teen flees from reality, living in the imaginary world of fantasy and magic, where she fights with giants. Her family does not understand her, peers do not like her, and she irritates teachers. And only recently moved here Sofia, her same age, trying to make friends with her.
Put the hammer down..
“There are times when you have to ask yourself, Do I want to live my life as a coward or a warrior?” This reminded me a lot of “A Monster Calls” and to a lesser degree like “Pan’s Labyrinth”…a girl creates this fantasy world as an escape from your very real turmoil. But is it all in her mind? It’s a slow one, but kind of worth getting an answer.

Annihilation

Here’s The Lowedown on “Annihilation” (R – 2018 – US)…I don’t remember eating!!

Genre: Sci-Fi/Invasion

My Score: 8.0

Cast=8 Acting=9 Plot=10 Ending=6 Story=7
CGI=10 Pace=5 Epic=9 Alien=9 Twist=7

A Biologist’s husband disappears for a year and when he returns something is horribly wrong. They are taken to a government facility, where the biologist volunteers to go on the same mission her husband did.
I got nothin...
“The mutations were subtle at 1st; more extreme as we got closer to the lighthouse. Corruptions of form…duplicates of form.” I liked this movie as a whole, but there were pieces missing. It also ended how I thought, but not how I wanted. There were some pacing issues at the beginning…and questions I had at the end. It was very confusing, but I liked the uniqueness of it and the visualizations were CRAZY! You have to decide if you want to face it or fight it…I, on the other hand, chose to enjoy it.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Here’s The Lowedown on “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (PG-13 – Theatrical – US)…This kid’s growing on me!

Genre: Sci-Fi/Space

My Score: 7.4

Cast=8 Acting=7 Plot=10 Ending=7 Story=6
CGI=9 Violent=8 Pace=6 Space=6 Funny=7

With the emerging demand for hyper fuel and other resources, Han Solo finds himself in the middle of a heist alongside other criminals, where future friends are met in an adventurous situation exposing the criminal underworld.
Channeling his inner Billy Dee
Said to be the first Star Wars movie to lose money in the box office, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” seems to have come out too early. I didn’t feel there was anything wrong with it…just that if you’re going to release a Star Wars movie, you need to hold off and let us fanboys start foaming at the mouth before releasing another film.

Death Wish

Here’s The Lowedown on “Death Wish” (R – 2018 – US)…Now I’m satisfied!!

Genre: Action/Gun

My Score: 7.3

Cast=8 Acting=7 Plot=6 Ending=10 Story=6
Violent=9 Pace=5 F/X=10 Gun=7 Reboot=5

Dr. Paul Kersey is an experienced trauma surgeon, a man who has spent his life-saving lives. After an attack on his family, Paul embarks on his own mission for justice.
I won't kill you...Jack will
“If a man really wants to protect what’s his, he has to do it for himself.” There were some pacing issues for me for the first half of the film…then I realized the original Charles Bronson film was the same way. Once the revenge bit got rolling, the action escalated to a feverish point. I was really surprised by the amount of gore…then I saw Eli Roth directed and I was like DUH! It’s a solid reboot, but nothing to set it apart from the original.

Tomb Raider

Here’s the Lowedown on “Tomb Raider” (PG-13 – 2018 – US)…I’m not that kind of Croft!!

Genre: Action/Video Game

My Score: 7.3

Cast=7 Acting=7 Plot=8 Ending=9 Story=6
Violent=8 Pace=7 F/X=9 Game=5 Mystery=7

Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.
Hang in there, baby
“All myths are foundations of reality.” When people ask me what I thought, the answer has always been ‘I liked it…but’. I had a few issues with this, but the action and the CGI were really well done. I love Alicia Vikander, but Angelina Jolie is the only Lara Croft for me. I guess I was most disappointed by the lack of confidence the character had…I get it’s supposed to be a reboot but it’s Lara F’n Croft!! I wanted it to seem like she had a bigger sack than most men and that just wasn’t there…oh well maybe if there ‘s a sequel.
